Cloth diapers VS disposable diapers

28 juin 2020

I have told you a lot about myself and I will continue to do so since the objective of this blog is to discuss my professional and personal life in order to share tips and advice with you and to show you that normal life has its good and bad sides.

But I would also like this blog to be an opportunity to share with you my opinion on certain products or services that you may need to use. Obviously, my opinion is purely personal and subjective, but it may be useful to you.

You'll think I'm obsessed with diapers because I've talked about them before, but my first product comparison will definitely be about the wonderful world of diapers. This is a super sexy topic!

Ecological awareness: a new challenge?

Over the years and especially since Luc arrived, my ecological awareness has strongly evolved in the positive direction. I don't necessarily want to leave a better world, because I'm not sure I have the capacity. On the other hand, I would like to leave a world as correct as possible so that our children can grow up there in complete serenity. And this goes through the protection of our planet which is ultimately our mother to all.

I'm not a fervent ecologist and I still have a lot to learn, that's for sure! But by small touches, we can all intervene in the protection of the planet and the improvement of our quality of life.

Cloth diapers: the ideal solution?

It is in this spirit that from the birth of Luc, we opted for washable diapers. A healthier way for the planet, because they are reusable as many times as necessary.

But, we were quickly disillusioned.

I'm sure you have the image in your head there. You or me with a diaper filled to the brim with such glorious stuff in hand. It must be washed in a sink before putting the fabric in the washing machine. Then, you have to disinfect the sink and repeat this little ritual a good ten times a day.

I'll spare you the details, but you will have understood that in terms of practicality we are far from the mark, especially when working on the side. So you have to manage meetings and work and take breaks to go and change the little one and then spend several minutes cleaning up. From a chore of about 5/10 minutes we go to a chore of 15/20 minutes.

Beyond this unattractive aspect, washable diapers are much thicker which does not facilitate mobility at all. Luc was no longer free to move and was quite stuck. With cloth diapers, no more babies biting their feet.

Classic diapers, the most practical

Classic nappies, there is no denying it, are the best in terms of value for money and practicality. On the other hand, in terms of ecology, we are far from the mark. We had to use a few here and there, but I can't tell you more about it since we made the choice not to use these products. And yes, with us we like to complicate our lives! But it's for a good cause.

Biodegradable diapers, the unstable balance

After the failure of washable diapers, we therefore decided to opt for “green” and organic diapers made from bamboo and coconut fibres. Said like that, it makes you dream. Biodegradable diapers have the advantage of making an effort for the environment while being less restrictive than washable diapers.

Luc was more free in his movements and adapted rather well. We therefore assume that they are comfortable for him and that they respect our ecological values. The winning combo!

But now, organic diapers do not have absorbent chemicals, leaks are much more frequent than with a conventional diaper. It is therefore necessary to monitor baby and change it much more often.

After 2 months of use, we adapted well and we managed to find our rhythm.

In terms of budget, we are much higher than conventional nappies, so it is a decision that must be carefully considered.

The little trick is to buy them in large quantities in order to have discounts on a wholesale price.

In the end, Svetlana and I found our balance with the biodegradable nappies, but that means I have to be with Luc more often to make sure he's always dry.

The significant advantage that I see is that I am much more attentive to Luc and that I devote more time to sharing this moment with him.

He returns to nursery in September... I expect damage, I hesitate between laughing and crying imagining the faces of kindergarten assistants facing these nappies.

And you, which option did you choose? If you have any green advice, I'm all ears!

Looking forward to reading you,

Yours very devoted Van.
